Heart lake is as much a local destination as it is a fantastic, beautiful surprise for everyone drawn to visit the Mt. Shasta area.
I’ve been to Castle Lake a bunch of times.
It’s my favorite place to swim in the whole world (when it’s warm of course.)
But I wanted to have a new adventure…
…and man, I wasn’t disappointed.
It was a crowded day in town, as everyone was preparing for the July 4th Walk/Run Celebration.
It was also a sweltering summer afternoon the day I hiked to Heart Lake for the first time.
I was absolutely pouring sweat.
It was worth plowing through the heat though.
I mean seriously…
I’d heard so many of my friends talk about Heart Lake that I REALLY wanted to see and experience for myself what all the buzz what about.
I’ve lived in Mt. Shasta long enough that I SHOULD know all the local favorite spots!
I drove up the exquisite winding road to Castle Lake (while I digested all of the amazing views I’ve seen a thousand times, but can’t help and feel total in-awe of every single time!)
The parking was extremely packed, but I found a sweet spot in the main area right near Castle Lake itself.
I took a dip in Castle Lake right after I parked before making the trek…
…AND OH MY GOD!
Talk about feeling revitalized!
The water in Castle Lake is so incredibly clear, crisp and refreshing, it’s virtually impossible to NOT feel like all of your stresses just get absolutely washed away… like magic.
When I got out of the water, I was sufficiently cooled down and ready to tackle the mile or so hike up to Heart Lake.
By the way…
Ask us about where the Heart Lake trail-head is either when you check in or come into Yaks where we’ll point you in the right direction (and make sure you have enough espresso in your system to conquer the quest!)
Back to my story…
As I was making my way up the trail, I couldn’t help but acknowledge how clear my head felt.
It’s truly mind-blowing what happens when you’re by yourself, hiking in one of the most visually inspiring places on the planet.
It’s something everyone NEEDS to experience at least once in their life.
When I finally reached Heart Lake itself, there wasn’t anyone else there.
Probably because I was only one insane enough to be hiking in the 90+ degree blazing sun (or maybe it was all the activity in town!)
It’s a tiny lake. I won’t lie.
But the shallow water warms up brilliantly…
…and the contrast between Castle Lake’s chillier temperature and Heart Lake’s inviting heat is a totally different feeling…
…A complex combination of sensations that I quite frankly can’t describe.
You have to experience it yourself!
And when you do experience Heart Lake, please take some video or pictures.
We’d love to blog about it further so more people can see and feel attracted to the majesty of Mt. Shasta!

P.S. When got back down to Castle Lake, I jumped in again and took a relaxing, unwinding swim before driving back into town.
